HOW TO THINK OF A GOOD GAME IDEA – Article Notes

My notes

Step one: Find a main Character

  • The main character can be a person, place, or thing
  • Most well-developed games have some sort of the main character
  • The main character is the character controlled by the player
  • Now it’s time to elaborate on our main character

Step two: Creating Variables

  • These are things that the character encounters in the game
  • Can be objectives or goals that must be achieved in order to advance
  • Can also be obstacles that your character must get around
  • There are two types of variables, an objective variable, and a conflict variable

Step three: Elaborating our idea

  • What Is your character’s goal?
  • How will he achieve that goal?
  • Answering these questions is elaborating
  • You are telling the story of your character
  • This is also the part where you can decide if you want to add more characters

Step four: Game Specs

  • We must add a name, category, target audience, and description to our game
  • The title of your game should be catchy and related to the game
  • Identify what type of game you created
  • The target audience is who you expect your game to be played by
  •  A description should be a short summary of the game and excite the player and make them want to play it

Summary

Overall I found this article really helpful. I struggle with coming up with ideas so this article helped me break it down into smaller pieces. I definitely will be using this when I make my next game.

Construct 3 Ghost Shooter

Summary

I made this game in about 4 hours. It took me a while to kind of get used to Construct but once I established a pattern it became a lot easier. In this game, you have to kill all the monsters to earn points. The trick is you can’t stay in one spot for too long or the monsters will see you and gain speed. Also, it takes 5 shots to kill a monster just to make the game a little bit more challenging.

Logline: Player/ Shooter fighting the monsters for points and survival

Goal: My goal is to just be able to make a playable game without being overwhelmed and stressing out

Feedback

What worked well in the game?

What is something that could be added or removed to make the game better?

Evan: I noticed bullets come from shoulder instead of gun

Jacob: It is so simple but also very fun

Jacob: Found a bug: score goes invisible when it goes too high|Brev: Oh that can be fixed by extending the text box in the editor
